About Bach Remedies

Bach's FlowerBach® Original Flower Remedies

Dr. Edward Bach was a Physician and Homeopath who spent his life searching for the purest methods of healing. Dr Bach discovered 38 remedies which he split into seven different groups that can be combined to suit the individual. The flower remedies are made from wild plants, trees and bushes. They work by treating the individual rather than the disease or its symptoms and are a gentle way to manage your emotions and rediscover the positive side of ourselves.

Each of the 38 Bach® Original Flower Remedies is unique and helps to treat a different emotion. Most people find it reasonably easy to select their own remedies. All you need to do is find the remedy (or remedies) that seems to reflect your situation, mood or personality the best. You can mix up to seven together at a time. All the states described are everyday human emotions that we all feel from time to time. Even the most negative state has a corresponding positive quality that shows us what we can be when we are fully ourselves.

How Made:

Preparing the Bach® Original Flower Remedies Mother Tinctures is a three step process.

Step One: Mother Tinctures are prepared from plant material, flower heads and natural spring water using either the Sun or Boiling Method as defined by Dr. Bach in the 1930s. There are two methods of preparing the Mother Tinctures:

The Sun Method
Dr. Bach used this method to make 20 of the remedies, most of which are delicate flowers and bloom in the height of summer. Flower heads are floated on water in a glass bowl and left in full sunlight for three hours. On a busy remedy-making day, there might be as many as six or seven bowls in the sun. Some of the flowers are only in bloom for a day or two, so timing is crucial.

The Boiling Method
Dr. Bach used this method to prepare the remaining 18 remedies, from trees, bushes and plants, most of which flower in the early part of the year. These are picked, boiled in a saucepan and left in the pan to cool outdoors.

Step Two:

The flowers are removed from the potentised water, which is then filtered and mixed with an equal part of 40% proof brandy, this makes the Mother Tincture. The brandy acts purely as a preservative for the remedy and is non-active ingredient.

Step Three:

The Mother Tinctures arrive at the Nelsons bottling plant in Wimbledon, South London. To make the individual stock bottles you buy in shops, the Mother Tincture is added to 27% grape alcohol. The stock bottles are then packed up, sealed for safety and quality and dispatched to stores and countries around the world.

Bach's RescueRescue Remedy® is a combination of five Bach Original Flower Remedies - Rock Rose, Impatiens, Clematis, star of Bethlehem and Cherry Plum, specifically blended to help you face daily stresses or emergency situations in a better frame of mind. It can be taken when you feel fearful, nervous or unduly uptight and bothered. Today the distinct 'little yellow bottle' is relied on by millions of people when things just get too much.

How Made:

The flower remedies (Mother Tinctures) used in RESCUE Remedy® are still made at the Bach Centre in Mount Vernon, Oxfordshire, England using the methods developed by Dr Bach over 70 years ago. They are then sent to our factory in Wimbledon, London where they are diluted with brandy (legally declared as 27% grape alcohol) and bottled in a licensed manufacturing facility to the highest quality standard.

There are 3 key steps involved in manufacturing RESCUE Remedy®:

Step 1

The five Mother Tinctures are made from plant material or flower heads and natural spring water using either the Sun or Boiling methods as laid out by Dr Bach. The sun method is used to make the remedies derived from the most delicate flowers that bloom in the height of summer. The boiling method is used for the remedies from trees, bushes and plants most of which flower in the early part of the year.

Step 2

The flowers are removed from the potentised water which is then filtered and mixed with an equal part of 40% brandy, this makes the Mother Tincture. The brandy acts purely as a preservative and is a non-active ingredient.

Step 3

The Mother Tinctures are sent from Oxfordshire to Nelsons’ bottling plant in London. Here the Mother Tincture is diluted with 27% grape alcohol (the legal name for brandy at this strength) to produce the finished product you buy at the shops.

Who Can take the Remedies?

Bach® Original Flower Remedies are suitable for the whole family.

Bach Original Flower Remedies helps us to manage the ups and downs of everyday life. For clinical and emotional problems, you should always seek professional help.

Everyone

Being yourself means being relaxed, fulfilled and natural. When we feel ourselves, we are at our best. We can cope with everything that life throws at us.

But sometimes… well sometimes, we aren’t quite ourselves. We feel out of sort, as if something isn’t right. And sometimes we need a little help to get back on track.

You can use the Bach Original Flower Remedies to overcome everyday bad feelings. You can use them when you are ill because most doctors agree that good emotional health supports and aids the recovery of physical health. You can use them to move on in your life and to find hidden strengths and potentials.

Above all, you can use them to be yourself.

In Pregnancy

Planning for a new baby is a lot of work, and in the rush, it's easy to forget to take proper care of the most important person in your baby's life - you.

Taking care of yourself is vital at a time when your body is changing and your baby is growing. It's normal to feel tired at times, or just out of sorts, and mostly you get over it and get on. Sometimes, though, you need a little help. Whatever is in your way - worry, despondency, uncertainty - the Bach Original Flower Remedies can help.

Below are some suggested remedies for the various stages of pregnancy.

Before Birth

You may feel unsettled if pregnancy represents a big change in your life. This is an indication for Walnut.

  • Maybe you are going for a scan and feel anxious that everything will be all right with the baby. Anxiety for the welfare for somebody else is an indication for Red Chestnut.
  • Working through your pregnancy may leave you short of rest and tired. The Bach flower remedy for this is Olive.
  • Sometimes the time seems to drag - if only the baby would come tomorrow! - and you may feel irritable and impatient. This is an indication for Impatients.

During the Birth

It is normal to feel apprehensive when you think about going into labour. The remedy for known fears - maybe you worry about contractions or of having to have a Caesarean - is Mimulus.

However well prepared you are, labor itself can come as something of a shock. Star of Bethlehem is a good remedy to assist us at this time.

Above all others, one remedy comes into its own at this time: Rescue Remedy®. Rescue Remedy is a mix of remedies specially chosen to help at times of everyday crisis. It contains Bach Original Flower Remedies for shock, terror, agitation, loss of control, and feelings of faintness, so it's an ideal one-stop solution to take with you into the labor room.

Early days as a new mom

Too many things to cope with? When everything comes at once, try some Elm to put you back in control.

Is your baby really all right? If you feel too anxious about his or her welfare to enjoy this time, try some Red Chestnut to reassure you.

Baby blues* If you find yourself taking small setbacks to heart, try Gentian. If there haven't been any setbacks but you still feel down, take Mustard.

* A mild form of baby blues reflects natural changes as your hormone levels return to pre-pregnancy levels. If you feel very unhappy talk to a health care professional who will be able to listen and help. If pregnant or breast-feeding, always consult your health professional befure use.

Your Kids

Growing up is full of ups and downs. Although it is a time of development and discovery, for many it can also be a time of awkwardness and insecurity. A child's behaviour during this period can often range from painful shyness, to tears and tantrums.

This, of course, is completely natural and generally something which parents just hope their child grows out of. However, as the way a child feels determines how they act, then the simple solution to negative behaviour is to make him or her feel more positive emotionally.

How can the Bach Original Flower Remedies help?
Although every case is different and any of the 38 remedies could apply, here are some common symptoms experienced by children:

  • For known fears such as shyness or fear of the dark, try Mimulus
  • For over-excitability, excess energy or difficulty calming down, try Vervain
  • For lack of confidence, try Larch
  • For possessiveness of toys, or clinginess, try Chicory
  • For protection during change such as a new school, surroundings or change of routine, try Walnut

How do I give my child Bach Original Flower Remedies?
A couple of drops of the remedy can simply be added to a drink (if you're worried about the alcohol content, a hot drink will evaporate this). Also, Larch (Kids Confidence Remedy) and Clematis (Kids Daydream Remedy) are available in our NEW alcohol-free kids formula.
