Natural Feeding

Natural Feeding, Recipe for Carnivores
by Dr. Swift

This recipe is roughly enough to feed a pet 15-30 lbs. Adjust to the needs of your pet. Generally, one meal daily is adequate. Allow pet to eat its fill. Pick up leftovers after 20 minutes.

  • 1/2 lb. raw beef, chicken, lamb, turkey, venison, occasionally seafood or eggs

  • 1/4 tsp. powdered kelp or other sea vegetables

  • 1 tbs. bone meal (1/2 tbs. if bones are fed often)

  • 1/2 cup pureed raw veggie mix: carrots, zucchini, sprouts, broccoli, celery, parsley, cucumber, beets, other green leaves

  • 1/2 tsp. of spirulina, barley powder, wheat grass juice powder, bee pollen or green food supplement such as PetiGreens

If stools are too firm with the above recipe, try adding one of the following items: 1 teaspoon wheat bran, 1/2 teaspoon ground flax seed or ground psyllium seed.

Leave meat in large chunks. Initially, you may need to use ground or diced meat to help pet adjust. A piece of organic liver is advised 1-2 times per week. If your pet's digestive system is sensitive to diet changes, start with small amounts of raw foods and increase slowly. If concerned about cleanliness of meat, rinse it with food grade hydrogen peroxide diluted 1 tsp/qt of water, then rinse with clean water. Food may be made in large batches in advance, and frozen.

RAW bones are important for healthy teeth. To introduce bones, allow your pet to have one for 10-15 minutes every few days and observe digestive function. Increase access time as pet adapts.

In addition, there are 3 strongly suggested supplements:

  • High potency digestive aid with enzymes & friendly bacteria, such as FloraZyme EFA (1/2 tsp/lb. of meat), FloraZyme LP (1 tsp.lb. of meat) or FerretZyme Plus (1 tsp/lb. of meat).

  • A variety of gland and organ concentrates such as Pet G.O. (powder or wafers as per label).

  • An ionic trace mineral supplement such as Trace AniMinerals (20-40 drops/lb. of meat).

Some pets need additional oil in their diet. If your pet does, try 1/2 - 1 tsp. of high quality fish oil. Most pet food recipes include grains such as oatmeal or brown rice. I prefer no grain

Always have fresh purified water available. If using distilled or reverse osmosis water, add liquid ionic trace minerals as per label directions.

This recipe is for informational purposes. It is not intended to replace consulting with a professional. Raw food diets entail certain risks (so do processed pet foods!)
