QUESTION:
My ferret really likes water and I was thinking of
taking him into my pool, and of course staying with him
and watching him closely while he's there. But I wasn't
sure if chlorine would hurt him. Will it?
ANSWER:
The problem with swimming pool water is not necessarily
the chlorine as the combination chlorine, body sweat,
dirt etc... the water then contains chloramines and
that is what burns the eyes and turns them red. Before
you put your ferret in the water,
check to see what the level of chlorine and acid is.
You will need to be right there as he
has very short legs and will tire very easily. Mink
are great swimmers, but ferrets are tunnel animals
not aquatic. When I lived in Miami I had a ferret that
would run around the pool when we were all in the water.
I would let him swim about 8-10 feet, he would head
directly to the skimmer and climb out.
Proceed with great caution, remember
he could get too much water in his lungs and develop
pneumonia, please be careful!!!
