QUESTION:
I have an unfixed male, Beavis, who I rescued 2 years ago from a bad home. I
know alot about ferrets but not much about breeding or unfixed ferrets. Last
year we found a couple who had a unfixed female and we tried breeding them.
The couple unfortunately did not take proper care of the mommy and she and
her babies passed on. So this year Beavis is in heat again (for> the last
6 months) and I have no ferret to breed him with. We have had to separate
him because is trying to mount my other boys? How long do they stay in heat?
or do they have to bred to go out of heat? I just got 2 new ferrets from
someone who couldn't keep them in her new apartment. One of them is female
(my first one). Beavis was all over her, so he had to be put away for a separate
playtime. Can unfixed male do his business with a fixed female? or can this
hurt her? Should I keep them separate until he is out of heat? I have talked
to my vet about getting beavis fixed but he is older and it is expensive.
I would greatly appreciate any help.
ANSWER:
Beavis should go out of heat at anytime, if it has been 6 months. Keep him separate
from the others as they are already spayed and neutered.
Where are you located? It should not
be expensive to neuter a ferret, it takes very little
time, if you need help finding a vet in your area,
a Ferret Rescue or Shelter should be able to help you
find one with ferret experience. If you do not plan
to neuter him you MUST keep him separate from the others
it is not fair to him or them. It will start all over
again next year, when breeding season comes around
and will last another 6 months, males do not go out
of season, when mated, as females do, best neuter for
his sake!
