I would like to know how to teach my ferret to come on comand.

ANSWER:
That is not an easy task! Ferrets are like 2 year olds and do what they like when they like!

If your ferret has a particular healthy snack that he really likes, you could try putting it in a can or a noisy paper bag and shake it, give it to him each time he comes.

Every time you do this it enforces the idea that he will get something he likes, when he responds. Whenever you need him to come, all you will have to do is shake the can or paper bag and he should come running, make sure you call his name each time.

QUESTION:
I Have recently purchased a ferret for my 12yr old son, she's 14weeks old. Would like to know if you could recommend a source for training Zoe, thats what he named her! From what I've read they are very intelligent, and would like to train her, behaviorally for her safety, as well as the fun stuff I think it would give her a better quality of life. If it matters we also have 2 small dogs and 1 cat.

ANSWER:
Ferrets are intelligent no doubt, however they are very much like a two year old child, they respond when they feel like it, so don't expect too much!

You may want to purchase the book, FERRETS FOR DUMMIES, it covers all aspects of ferret care. Plus you may want to contact a FERRET RESCUE/SHELTER in your area, they will be able to give you and your son some hands on tips, from their experience.

It really depends on the personality of the ferret as to what you can train it to do. Ferrets are like 2 year old children 'who do what they want, when they want! Some will sit for a treat, some will 'roll over', however don't expect to train them like a dog, or you may be very disappointed! Ferrets will bring you many years of enjoyment and laughter by their fun loving antics and not only will they steal your heart, but your socks and keys too!
