QUESTION:
My ferret is neutered but he's behaving sexually with
my other ferrets. Is this normal?
ANSWER:
It is not normal for a neutered ferret to act that
way. First I would consider taking him to the vet for
a check up to make sure he does not have a urinary
tract infection, or possibly an infection in the sheath
surrounding the penis.
The other problem that is shown by his behavior is
the early signs of ADRENAL DISEASE (he is not too young
for this). THE SEX HORMONES ARE AFFECTED AND THE FERRET
EXHIBITS SEXUAL BEHAVIOR. Once again your vet will
be able to advise you if this may be the onset of this
disease.
Until then you may want to keep your ferret in darkness
once the sun goes down, by covering the area of his
cage that receives light or keep him in a darkened
room at night, this prevents more stress to the adrenal
glands. Ferrets are governed by photosynthesis (amount
of natural light/seasons) and therefore additional
light only causes stress to the adrenal glands.
