Seedy Poop:

QUESTION:
I worried about my Ferrett Freddrick. He's about 4 1/2 years old and has had health problems in the past. He's recovered and been doing fine for about 10 months. For the last 4 days he's had diarreah. It's normal in color, but sometimes seedy and smells very bad. He's acting just fine, so this doesn't worry me too much; I know how he acts when something seriously wrong. I don't want to ignore this if something could be seriously wrong. I leave for vacation in less than a week and I don't want to leave him when he's having this problem. Thanks for all your help and time

ANSWER:
Have you made any changes in his food lately? Seedy poop is usually a sign of food not be digested. If not the first thing that comes to my mind is that his blood glucose may be low that also causes changes in poop, especially diarhhia.

Have you ever given him any baby food? Buy him GERBER'S CHICKEN or TURKEY, give him 3-4 teaspoonsful twice a day. Mix a teaspoon of water to thin it a little and warm, he should take it from your finger and once he gets used to it, he will eat it from a shallow bowl.

The baby food will help level off his blood sugar and if he is having digestive troubles this will be easier for him to digest and at the same time he will be getting high doses of protein. Try this for a couple of days, if you see no improvement, you will need to take him to a vet.

Make sure he is eating and drinking plenty of water, so he does not dehydrate. If you are concerned buy him some PEDIALITE, you can buy it in the BABY section of the grocery store in packets (ELECTROLYTES) and mix with water it is cheaper that way, this will replace the electrolytes he is losing.

QUESTION:
I have a Marshall farms ferret and he is 3 1/2 months old. I have him on Marshall ferrets food and other products but he still stinks and his cage to also he has runny stool with seed like things and yellowish green watery substance is there something I can do other than the order spay and order shampoo he's supposed to be descented and neutered.

ANSWER:
FERRETS ARE CARNIVORES (MEATEATERS) their diet should be a high MEAT protein diet. When they are young they practice biting each other to prepare themselves to kill their prey, which is small rodents, rabbits and birds. If we handle them from a young kit and food is always available to them, they have no need to bite! You should be able to feed them raw or cooked meat, but you must feed them a ferret food, high in meat protein to balance the diet. In the wild they would be eating the fur, skin, bones, intestines etc.. of the animal, so if we feed only meat, it would not have all the necessary ingredients to complete the ferret diet. On my website is the next best food to the real 'wild diet' ARCHETYPAL1 and ARCHETYPAL2.
