For Ferrets Only
Ask Angela

Responsible Enough:

QUESTION:
I love ferrets! Ioved them since the 3rd grade.Ever since i have been trying to convince my parents to get me one. I have finaly won my mom over, but my dad just will not listen. So do you have any advice for a girl trying to convince her dad to get her a pet ferret?

ANSWER:
You didn't say how old you are, but I am guessing you are a young teenager? If you think you are responsible enough to care for a ferret, then you might want to suggest to your father that you go to a local FERRET SHELTER and perhaps you could volunteer a few hours a week, to help.

Your father would then know that you are serious and at the same time if he could go with you, he will be able to see what happy creatures ferrets are, plus learn all about them. It is very important to know how to care for your ferret before buying/adopting one and going to a FERRET SHELTER is the best way to learn.

There is a lot of information on my site in FERRET SCHOOL, the basic care is in ALL ABOUT FERRETS, but I would highly recommend 'hands on care' with people who live every day with ferrets and spend their lives caring for them. If I can help you find a local shelter, please let me know.

QUESTION:
I am 12 years old and really want a ferret. How can I show my parents that I am responsible enough to own and take care of one? Maybe you can send back some benefits of owning a ferret?

ANSWER:
Why don't you contact the local FERRET RESCUE/SHELTER, I am sure they would love you to volunteer your time helping with the abandoned ferrets there? One of your parents, or both, could go with you and this way they would see what is involved in caring for a ferret, plus after you have proven you can care for one, maybe the right ferret will be waiting there for you to take home! Ferrets are a large responsibility and do require time that you must spend with them, not only must you keep the cage clean, give fresh water and food daily but you must provide the ferret with time to play, outside of his cage under supervision. As ferrets age, they do require specialized medical care by a ferret knowledgeable veterinarian, so another way you could show your parents how you can be responsible, is to set aside some of your spending money in a little savings account, especially for when the ferret gets sick.
