Litter to Use:

QUESTION:
What cedar and litter do you recommend for ferrets that wont irritate their skin and wont irritate them? she has a cedar allergy.

ANSWER:

Do not use CEDAR or PINE, they can be deadly not only can the wood chips get stuck in the intestines but the oil in the wood causes allergic rashes and respiratory problems. How long have you been using cedar? It has been years that the information about the dangers has been published everywhere, it is dangerous for any small animal, including your birds!

Where are you using the cedar, is it just in the litter pan, or all over the cage? PLEASE take a look at my picture of the cages on my site, you will see that we have a dedicated litter box and the rest of the cage has covers over the wire. You can use old T-shirts, sheets, or baby blankets in your cage, they are easily washed and if you put a little softener in the rinse cycle the ferrets will smell really good!

Provide them with a litter box that has either World's Best Cat Litter (all natural corn), Corn Cob, or recycled newspaper, such as Cell Sorb or Yesterday's News, all available at your Feed Store or Pet Store.

QUESTION:
I was wondering if it was ok and safe to use wood pellets as my ferrets litter box if not can i please have other great suggestions and even if its safe to use the wood pellets can you still give me other suggestions?

ANSWER:
If you are referring to wood stove pellets, a lot of people use them. I prefer to use recycled newspaper pellets as it is more absorbent and keeps down the odor.

Do not use pine pellets as they can cause respiratory problems in ferrets, same as cedar. You will have to discard litter daily when using wood that is not treated, therefore it is safer to use a recycled newspaper litter as it has been processed to remove any bacteria etc.. There are also litters made from corn and wheat that can be used. In my large communal litter boxes I use the World's Best Cat Litter (all natural made from corn). It is clumpable and extremely easy to use, cleanup is a cinch.
