QUESTION:
Our three fuzzies have lice! Not fleas nor mites, I know a louse when I see one.
Products that are for fleas & ticks do not kill lice. Although we comb
them out, treat the house and wash everything in sight, we are not gaining
any ground on this problem. Any recommendations on a treatment?
ANSWER:
I have had ferrets for 23 years and been rescuing for most of that time, I have
never had ferrets with LICE! On the other hand several rescued guinea pigs have
had them and we have treated them with IVOMEC, also my friend brought her puppy
who had lice and the vet suggested that we treat ALL the ferrets just incase,
as the puppy had been in the ferret room.
My advise is go to your vet have the 'varmints' examined under a microscope and
I am sure if they do prove to be LICE then IVOMEC will be the easiest route.
You may have a bill for the exam but the IVOMEC is very cheap, it can be given
by injection, but also mixed with a diluent can be given by mouth, you will probably
need at the most 3 treatments.
It is such an easy way to rid the ferrets of these 'foes' and so inexpensive,
can't imagine what you have paid already for useless products! Now on the other
hand if it is mites, the Ivomec will treat that also, along with a good CHLORAHEXIDERM
SHAMPOO/FLUSH. Your vet will be able to advise!
For fleas the best product is ADVANTAGE, all of these products are available
at your veterinarian and it would be good if you go there as soon as possible
as all of these 'varmints' can cause many other problems, that I am sure you
will not want your ferrets to have.
