QUESTION:
I have a 6 month old male. He is neutered and de-scented.
He is a little furry ball of energy and as bad as a ferret
can be. He seems completely healthy other than I have recently
noticed a bald patch on his right front leg right around
the knee area. I have seen him biting at it but not often
enough to cause baldness. It looks like it is a patch of
dry skin. I have been watching for excessive scratching
and I only notice him scratching right before he goes to
sleep and after he wakes up. And even then it s isn't a
constant habit. It seems that there are small hairs forming
in the bald area, but they disappear before they have a
chance to completely grow in. Like I said other than that
there is noting visibly wrong with him. He eats like a
horse and beats both of the cats up as he sees fit. Is
this something that I need to be worried about ?
ANSWER:
I am not sure, since I cannot see the problem.
Does he lay in a position against anything
that could be causing him to rub off the hair?
I wonder if it might be 'ringworm',
especially since you have cats. Sometimes they can
pass it on without showing signs themselves. Also there
may be the possibility that he may have brought it
home with him from the petshop.
The other probable cause is mange. Do
you take him outside much? I would take him to the
vet to have it checked just to be on the safe side,
in case it is either one, as both will spread on his
body, to the cats and to YOU!
