Heart Failure:

QUESTION:
I have a male albino who was recently diagnosed with heart failure, after spending 5 day's in hospital he has now been home for almost a month on Enacard and Lasix, (heart diuretic drugs) but occasionally straight after he has eaten he vomits his food up. This is not every mealtime in fact it has only happened about 3-5 times in a month. I was wondering if this is a side affect of the drugs because otherwise he is fine afterwards. Should I feed him first before giving him his medicine? My mum thinks it may be because I have been giving the drugs an an empty tummy, although the vet did not specify.

ANSWER:
Your mother is probably right! What are you feeding your ferret? If you could give him a little chicken baby food before you give him his medicine, it probably would help!

Some medicines need to be given with food, others do not, however if he is vomiting after you have given the meds then perhaps, trying it after food will help him.

I might add that you do need to make sure that your ferret is drinking plenty of water, since he is taking LASIX, so you could water down the chicken baby food and then you will know for sure he is drinking enough, as this could be a reason for vomiting, if he is dehydrated---Also you may want to mention it to the vet, just incase there is anything else going on, such as low blood sugar.
