QUESTION:
How long should I wait before handling kits? She/he is about 21/2 weeks old now,
mother is very friendly, but first time mum.
ANSWER:
If your mother ferret doesn't seem to mind you touching
the kits then it will be fine! Why don't you just
stroke the kits first, before actually picking them
up to make sure she does not get 'panicky' about
you handling them.
You could also give her a treat to keep her occupied
whilst you touch the kits, this way it will give you
time to remove your hands if she is not happy about
you touching them.
Some mother's do not seem to mind if you touch the
kits, but there are others that do! If you have a good
relationship with her, then she should be happy to
share her offspring with you, however do not let strangers
bother her!
The kits will open their eyes at 3 weeks of age and
will be much easier to handle as they will not need
their mother to clean them after eliminating and so
they become more independent! At that time you will
need to start playing with them so they will become
people friendly.
