QUESTION:
We have a pet squirrel, and we want to get a ferret, but we heard that wild ferrets
eat rodents and so we weren't sure if he would eat our squirrel.
ANSWER:
Squirrels are rodents and Ferrets are carnivores, therefore in the wild the ferret
would kill and eat the squirrel! Today the ferrets we have as pets are domesticated
and do not hunt for food as we provide them with food daily. However they have
been born to be predators, which means that they will instinctively hunt the
squirrel and most likely kill it, but not necessarily want to eat it.
If you allow your squirrel freedom in your home and then allow your ferret time
out of his cage to play, then you will have a disaster on your hands. Now you
are probably saying "that will never happen", but what if you or a
family member/friend does not secure the cage on either the ferret or the squirrel?
Or maybe someone will let one of them out not knowing the other is loose in the
house?
Personally I would not have both as pets in my home, unless cages had padlocks
and your parents would be there to supervise, one pet out of the cage at a time!
Both animals are very fast so there is a danger of not being fast enough to catch
either of them, if they both should be loose at the same time.
