Feeding and Sleeping Habits in Kits:

QUESTION:
I just bought a albino kit about 6 weeks old and she shakes allot when she is sleeping is this normal?

ANSWER:
Where are you keeping her? Do you have a warm blanket that she can crawl under? It could be that she was used to sleeping with her siblings and is feeling a little chilly and lost, from not being able to snuggle with them!

Make sure you give her A SMALL BOWL OF MOISTENED FOOD, AS SHE WILL NOT HAVE DEVELOPED HER MOLARS YET AND WILL FIND IT DIFFICULT TO BREAK UP THE DRY FOOD. You can leave a bowl of dry food in the cage and when you see that she is eating mostly the dry, then you can, in time, remove the wet food, make sure you change the wet food twice a day.

For a healthy snack you can give her some GERBERS BABYFOOD, CHICKEN OR TURKEY and give her about 1 teaspoonful twice a day, this should help while she is growing her molars. If she should start to sneeze or cough, then you will need to take her to the vet, to make sure she hasn't picked up something from the pet store that is making her ill. Do NOT wait to go to the vet, if she stops eating or drinking, this is a sign of something serious and may require antibiotics. If I can help you with anything else , please let me know.

PS---Do not wake her when she is sleeping as she needs her sleep to grow, she should not be disturbed!

QUESTION:
I heard that baby ferrets are suppose to sleep allot. My ferret is 8 weeks and hardly sleeps is this normal?

ANSWER:
Ferrets normally sleep between 18-20 hours a day! Are you waking him from sleep to play with him, because it is not a good idea to do so. You will need to have a routine of playing with him and he will get into the habit of knowing when those times are each day, it will be better for him.

When it gets dark the ferret should be in darkness this way his adrenal glands are not stressed and it will help him from developing adrenal disease as he gets older a very common illness in ferrets. You can cover the area of his cage, where he sleeps, with a dark towel or cloth if you have your lights on or near the room where he sleeps.

Play with him during daylight hours and never wake him to play, you will be disturbing his sleep patterns. I am sure you wouldn't want anyone to awaken you from a deep sleep

PS---make sure you leave food available all the time, just give him fresh each day, this way he will not be staying awake if he is hungry!
