QUESTION:
I contacted you once before about how to get a foreign object out of a ferret's
eye and you recommended me Ark Naturals Eye Wash. Well, my ferret seems to
have something stuck in her eye, again. It's a transparent wavy like fluid
situated in the middle of her eye. I poured a few drops of the eye solution
on a cotton swab and I scruffed her and tried putting the cotton swab on
her eye to take out the foreign debris. She started dooking like crazy and
so I stopped. I was scared that I hurt her. Do you think I should try taking
out what's in the eye again or does it sound like something that her eye
will clean out naturally? Is the eye wash supposed to take out the foreign
debris that's in the eye?
ANSWER:
Eye wash will do just as it says. Put a few drops in
her eye and then gently massage the closed eye from
the outside to inside, the object should wash into
the corner. If not you can gently lift the upper
eyelid over the bottom of the eye and the object
should move. You might want to check the bedding
to see if bits of fluff are loose and she is getting
it into her eye, if so wash bedding, putting in softener
to the rise and dry in dryer, it should remove all
lint.

QUESTION:
One of my ferrets had something in one of her eyes. It
was very small and brownish. However, my mother got
it out of her eye using her finger. Do you think
that was a safe thing to do? In the future, should
she have some foreign object in her eye again, what
would you recommend that I do?
ANSWER:
It is good that your Mum got the debris from the ferret's
ear, however depending on what it was, you will need
to watch her very closely. The debris could have
scratched the eye, which in time could cause an abrasion
on the eye and if so will need treatment such as
an antibiotic eye ointment.
You can wash the ferrets eye with a saline solution
made for eyes to make sure that all the debris is out
of the eye. We sell an eye wash specifically for ferrets,
but you need to do something now.
