Cleaning the Ferret Room:

QUESTION:
Hello. Our ferrets have their own room to play in and I was wondering what is the best way to clean this room and what is the safest things to use in cleaning. Thanks for your help.

ANSWER:
You didn't say what was covering the floor, so I will address several floor coverings that you may have and how to clean them!

LINOLEUM or TILE can be cleaned with several products:

  • Part bleach to 10 parts water, you will need to remove the ferrets and open windows to air out!
  • Soap, water and some white vinegar.

  • NOLVASAN diluted per instructions

I use Nolvasan, as it kills, bacteria, viruses, just about everything, you only use a small amount in a gallon of water, so it lasts. It is sold on my site.

CARPETS: They are a real problem!!! It is really difficult to remove the 'musky' odor of the ferret, you can try with the Nolvasan, in a spray, but remove the ferrets and wear a mask, it does irritate the mucous membranes if sprayed on. If you have to clean up urine and feces: 1 PART VINEGAR + 2 PARTS CLUB SODA, it helps but it would be better to remove the carpet!!!

WOOD: Use the Nolvasan diluted, wash, change water and wash again and then rinse, that should do it!

Make sure with ALL surfaces, that you try a little of your cleaning solution to make sure it does not damage or remove color, especially if you are renting. Hope this helps, thanks for asking.
