QUESTION:
I really want to adopt a ferret, but I have a cat. My parents have heard too
many bad things about ferrets. It's like they read up on ferrets, and pick
up on all the bad things about them and throw all the good things about them
away. They think that the ferret may turn on the cat and end up killing her.
Even though they wouldn't be living together, they are worried incase it
(the ferret) happens to escape.
ANSWER:
Cats and ferrets get along well, they are both carnivores, so neither will
kill the other! However it would depend on the personality of both the ferret
and the cat, as to whether they would be the 'best of friends'. Ferrets generally
play bite and cats tend to scratch, therefore they both need watching, when out
together. Cats have the advantage of being able to jump up on things to get away,
if the ferret became to nippy, unfortunately the cat could turn around and scratch
the ferret, so there would be the danger. As with all animals you will need to
make sure that they are compatible, but for sure the ferret should be contained
when not being watched as he can get into and out of anything the size of his
head. I personally have all my ferrets caged when I am not there to supervise
them, they are curious and naughty as a 2 year old child!
