Boney and Balding:

QUESTION:
I have a female about 6 yrs. old. She is getting bony on her back by her tail. She is also balding in that area. My other ferret passed 2 yrs. ago of a kidney ailment. Bandy was here before him even. So I am estimating her age. I don't know if it is adrenal or old age, anyone have an idea??? I hope it is just that she is aging. Cause she still acts as honoree as ever.

ANSWER:
From your description it sounds as if Bandy has adrenal disease, the area that is bald is indicative of that and is usually the first place that the ferret loses hair. You will need to watch her and if it continues you might want to ask your vet the options of treating her.

Ferrets with adrenal disease normally act fine except for some breeding behaviors that are caused by the excess of hormones, this can be counteracted by LUPRON (available from your vet) or MELATONIN which can be bought at WAL-MART.

Since she is 6 years plus, you will want to consider that fact, if you decide on surgery, however age is not always the deciding factor, her state of health will determine that. The other medical treatments I mentioned only treat the symptoms, but surgery will usually remove the problem.
